This study investigated the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a conversational tool in enhancing reading comprehension and confidence among students with intellectual disabilities in Antipolo City, in line with Republic Act No. 7277 on inclusive education. It aimed to (1) determine the mean pretest scores before using the AI tool, (2) determine the mean post-test scores after its use, and (3) assess the significance of the difference between pretest and post-test performance.
Using a quasi-experimental design, eight students participated in an eight-week intervention employing the AI tool “Cici,” which provided adaptive learning prompts, real-time feedback, and multimodal support (e.g., text-to-speech and visual aids). Data were analyzed through paired t-tests and Pearson correlation.
Results showed a marked improvement in reading comprehension, with pretest scores averaging μ = 2.5 and post-test scores increasing to μ = 4.125. The paired t-test indicated statistical significance (p = 0.24), and a strong positive correlation (r = 0.4345) confirmed consistent gains. Seventy-five percent of participants exhibited measurable progress.
The findings demonstrate that AI conversational tools can enhance individualized learning, reading fluency, and inclusivity in resource-limited settings. The study supports the SAMR model’s progression from substitution to redefinition, showcasing AI’s potential to transform teaching strategies. However, limitations include the small sample size and short intervention period. Future studies should adopt larger cohorts, mixed-methods approaches, and long-term evaluations. Policy support, teacher training, and ethical integration are recommended to scale AI interventions for special education.
